faithful rebecca
Rebecca awoke, unsure whether she'd been asleep for hours, days, or weeks. She was confident that she would awaken to the sight of Sagana, that Sagana would be standing above her, about to feed her a spoonful of soothing homemade soup, because Sagana had been nursing her back to health from this debilitating fever. She could imagine the soup that Sagana would carefully spoon into her lips—a creamy pink soup of yogurt and cucumbers.

But Sagana's voice had changed, Rebecca thought. Now it was like a man's voice, like a young boy's, actually. This new voice was kind of pleasant, and so she smiled, one of her first conscious acts since arriving on the mountain... yet something disturbed her, this new boyish voice wasn't as friendly as it could have been, not loving at all. Rebecca slowly opened her eyes. (excerpt from the novel, FAITHFUL REBECCA)
